Biodegradable certification

The long-time commitment of Assopiuma to enhancing and promoting the quality of feather/down paddings is focused on the material’s environmental sustainability. In response to designers’, furniture manufacturers’, and end consumers’ growing demand for products that respect and safeguard the environment, the association has chosen to certify the biodegradability of 100% natural feathers and down by means of strict laboratory tests. Following these tests and a certification of conformity issued by the specialized testing laboratory Hohenstein, Assopiuma has collected scientific data concerning the times and ways of degradation of feathers/down, which is now certified as ‘100% biodegradable’.

The feathers and down that were tested degraded in 5 months. This information is highly relevant since it allows us to calculate the transformation times of the material in composting plants at the end of its life. Feathers and down are turned into nitrogen fertilizer for agriculture and home gardening, thus reintegrating with the biological life cycle without contaminating the soil or groundwater.

A new label system

Today more than ever, labels are a guarantee for feather padding producers and end consumers that the feathers are a natural, sustainable, traceable and biodegradable resource.

Following a strict testing procedure and a certification issued by the specialised clinical laboratory Hohenstein, Assopiuma has collected detailed scientific data concerning the times and ways of feather degradation. This has led the association and its members to implement a complete updating of the labelling system, which will maintain the distinction between “ivory” and “gold” paddings, but will now also include the wording “100% biodegradable feather”. Even the new green printing colour was chosen to contribute to raising awareness about the manufacturers’ focus on environmental protection.

Due to their 100% natural origin, feathers are completely biodegradable. Once their long life cycle is over, they can be transformed in composting stations into nitrogen fertiliser which can be used in agriculture or home gardening and thus be reintegrated in the biological life cycle. If feathers are involuntarily scattered in the environment, they degrade in a few months and don’t pollute the land nor ground water.

Assopiuma’s new communication

Strongly committed for the past 40 years to the promotion of feathers and down feathers, Assopiuma has chosen to renovate and update its image – starting from the website – to speak to a vaster (and increasingly aware) audience in a straightforward way. This operation was triggered by a precise will to convey the values of the supply chain and launch a dialogue with the users and companies producing paddings. The ultimate aim is to create an actual community capable of offering useful stimuli and ideas to interior designers and product designers.

To convey the values of the supply chain and launch a dialogue with the users and companies producing paddings.

An important part of this ‘new course’ is the choice to emphasize the absolute sustainability of feathers, which are a natural and biodegradable material (according to recent studies, they can be transformed into nitrogen fertilizer at the end of their long life cycle to be used in agriculture or for domestic gardening thus once again becoming part of the biological life cycle of nature). This means feathers are perfect for all companies who seek to stay in line with the increasing attention towards safeguarding the environment and wish to adopt solutions and components with a low environmental impact.

The association’s mission is to let those who purchase a product including feathers fully appreciate its characteristics. Therefore, the new communication also introduces topics related to the comfort of paddings, stressing that the material is light, breathable, non-allergenic (if adequately washed and sanitized), hygroscopic (i.e. capable of furthering the dispersion of excess moisture). Lastly, the association guarantees a controlled supply chain and a safe feather traceability process thanks to a system of numbered labels that guarantee their origin and recognizability.
